System Services: Computer Browser

ID: oval:org.secpod.oval:def:14569Date: (C)2013-08-13   (M)2023-07-04
Class: COMPLIANCEFamily: windows

Computer Browser service maintains a listing of computers and resources located on the network. This service is not required on a standalone system. In fact, even if you want to browse the network (work-group or domain) or have mapped network shares as local hard drives, you can still do so. On a large network, one computer is designated the browser. All others just announce they are available every 12 minutes to duties if one of the other computers fail. No lag time is discernible if this service remains disabled on all but one computer. Honestly, I do not even believe one needs to be running. You could, but it sure does not need to be running on all computers, all of the time. Fix: (1) GPO: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\System Services\Computer Browser (2) REG: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser!Start

Platform:
Microsoft Windows 7
