The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service is an e-mail submission and relay agent. It can accept and queue e-mail messages for remote destinations and establish connections to other computers at specified intervals. Windows-based domain controllers use the SMTP service for intersite e-mail?based replication.
