Take ownership of files or other objects

ID: oval:org.secpod.oval:def:40306Date: (C)2017-04-25   (M)2023-05-09
Class: COMPLIANCEFamily: windows

This policy setting allows users to take ownership of files, folders, registry keys, processes, or threads. This user right bypasses any permissions that are in place to protect objects to give ownership to the specified user. When configuring a user right in the SCM enter a comma delimited list of accounts. Accounts can be either local or located in Active Directory, they can be groups, users, or computers. Vulnerability: Any users with the Take ownership of files or other objects user right can take control of any object, regardless of the permissions on that object, and then make any changes they wish to that object. Such changes could result in exposure of data, corruption of data, or a DoS condition. Counter Measure: Ensure that only the local Administrators group has the Take ownership of files or other objects user right. Potential Impact: None. This is the default configuration. Fix: (1) GPO: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Take ownership of files or other objects (2) REG: NO INFO
